It was May 24th of 1993, that day began the story of persecution of the most famous villain in the current Mexico. Joaquín “el Chapo” Guzmán was already an accomplished criminal in that year, owner of the commercial route that goes from Panama to the border area of Tijuana. However, a unique and specific crime would change the destiny of the king of crime.
The persecution began with the mysterious murder of the Cardinal Juan Jesus Posadas Ocampo, who was to receive the apostolic nuncio Girolamo Prigione at the airport. The vicar died in the middle of a shooting between the Arellano Felix’s hitmen and the Sinaloa Cartel leaders, when the firsts shot at Posadas Ocampo instead «El Chapo». That was the official truth, but there were quite a few inconsistencies.
Prigione had been a piece of chess in the movements of the Vatican, the government of Salinas de Gortari and the narco; on the other hand, the body of Posadas Ocampo was not performed an autopsy by order of Carlos Salinas de Gortari, according to Mario Rivas Souza.
But something became clear later, on June 9th in Guatemala: Joaquín “el Chapo” Guzmán would be the scapegoat for the coincidence or the state plot.
A taxi crossed the country from Guadalajara, where the holy man had died. On board was «El Chapo».
On June 10th, an operation of the Federal Judicial Police surrounded the streets of Chiapas. The leader of the mafia escaped to Guatemalan lands, only to be captured later by the Treasury Police.
However, there was no international cooperation to prevent the escape of the capo on January 19th, 2001.
A day after the escape, the Vicesecretary of Public Security, Jorge Tello, announced that «El Chapo» escaped in a laundry car. After that, it revealed that he received the help of approximately 70 accomplices.
Visitors from the National Comission of Human Rights determined that «El Chapo» enjoyed benefits, including: conjugal visits of prostitutes, alcohol and drugs, and he was able to finance tunnels trough the northern border.
Years later, this chapter would be remembered as the first spot of the maximum security prison system of Mexico.
